Snake Themed

After a long break from the blog, I thought I'd post this quick drawing I made of the fake band me and my friends are in. In Manhattan, this drunk guy was heatedly explaining his distaste for the United States and in his stupor pronounced it as The Knighted Snakes. So after several minutes of relentless taunting we all came to agreement that this would be the name of the raddest band ever. Once the band gets started, I believe all the show posters will be America and snake themed, you know, to show our pride, for snakes.

This and Thomas Edison

Eye Candy Cartoon from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

Here is the completed Eye Candy Film Festival cartoon. I worked on it a good amount last week and then took the weekend off to go to Lake Chelan. It was fun, but made me have to work about 15 hours a day for the past four days to finish seventy-five percent of this project. I didn't have time for my Aniboom.com project, so I just submitted this. I don't have high expectations.

I finally have the time to for my website that's been in the works for about ten months and counting. Also, I believe I'm going to start a series of animated shorts based on the life of Thomas Edison. Edison mock-ups coming tomorrow.

Olympia Film Society endtro animatic

Olympia Film Society Ender ender animatic from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

A friend of mine from Evergreen who is organizing an animation film festival asked me if I would make an a piece that would end the show. Here's the animatic. Check out his blog, http://blogs.evergreen.edu/tommythompson/ He's finishing up this amazing stop-motion project that he's been working on for the past two years. We were in AA together (Animated Archetypes) a production team at Evergreen, so I like to think I had a small hand in the making of his project. Check out The Eye Candy Film Festival on June 5th at the Capitol Theater in Olympia.

Arbitrary Title

Shooting tester from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

So, I've decided to change directions with this project. There's this competition on Aniboom.com to submit an animation under three minutes and other than that, as the competition tagline goes, "anything is possible." I've decided that having this character simply shoot the internet and all of it's terribleness is not very clever nor original. So, conforming to the rules of, "anything is possible", the character will start off reading that quote in a newspaper, and in a fit of anger will venture into the aniboom.com office where he will brutally combat the likes of Unicorns, leprauchans and Jesus, and once they are all dead, will declare that, "everything is impossible...now".

These two seconds took way to long and I still have to complete the matte paintings.

The Rollercoaster Ride

Concept art for the character killing the internet. I've had some interest in my work and opportunities have presented themselves recently. Maybe these drawings will come of something after all.

Tell Your Children Not to Walk My Way....

Kill Internet tester 5-2 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

Whenever I see a Hummer parking I always make sure to stay for a few more moments to check out what the person looks like who's climbing out. Unlike a large truck, which in the very least serve some kind of utilitarian purpose, Hummers serve no purpose, except to make you look like a huge douchebag-asshole. 90 Percent of the time it's a hiked up khaki shorts with polo golf shirt. There's a lot of Hummers in Gig Harbor.

Here is the progress.

Kill Internet

Kill Internet walk cycle tester from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

When I'm not working for a road construction company, I design websites. It's nice to have two completely different things to do. One, which involves monotonous, back-breaking labor; the other, sedentary, insanely-frustrating, complacency. While designing websites, I'll complete some small, menial task and lie to myself that I should be rewarded for my five minutes of work. This often involves going on to Facebook or watching an episode of Venture Brothers. All in all, these rewards take up 30 percent of my day. Some times I'll lose all motor functions and stare at the screen for minutes on end daydreaming about killing the internet, killing it dead.

So, trying to be a paid animator, who does websites, I decided I would make a short film about my utter frustration and aversion toward the internet that designing websites has brought me too. This is a tester of the "me" character walking into the large, corporate internet building where destruction ensues.

It's soo cold in Alaska. Second pic for my music related site. It's supposed to be punk or something. I need to start more aminating and less procrabinating, interweb designin' and construction workin'.

Outside in the rain

Ryan V. Julian Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

WalkCycle 3/28 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

So, I tried to do a couple of new things with this walk cycle. First off, I found that it's harder to make a walk cycle at this different perspective. Also, I made an error with the arms, they are timed with the feet which results in "twinning", a term I learned from this pretentious doosh bag that commented on my 11 Second Club video. Basically, it's when things look to symmetrical in animation. Also, I experimented with some overlapping with the hair and braking the joints.

High on Fire

So, I'm finally trying to get a web site together and in the works of doing some freelance whatnottery. Here's a logo I made. It's a play on the REO Speedwagon icon. Although I don't really like REO Speedwagon, the initials fit and I think my website will be music themed. Thoughts?

Fat Metal

Another digital painting. I think it turned out like an obsese, black metal Frida Kahlo, with the expression on it's face and the uni-brow.

Ryan Vs. Julian: Episode IV "A New Hope"

Walk Cycle 3/3 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

Nothing much too say about this one. I tried a different approach, seemed to work out. It's a little more cartoony-ee.

Ryan Vs. Julian: Episode III

Walk Cycle 3/2 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

So I tried to draw my personal walk cycle. People have told me I walk like a neanderthal, slouched with little arm movement and a slight limp due to repetitive ankle injuries. Shit turned out 'aight. Also, Julian accepted my dual. Clash of the animation titans has begun. Unfortunately he's taking a small hiatus from the "walk of the day" due to some other obligations which he clearly made up due to being scared, or should I say "scurred".

A real broh's broh, ya know, broh?!

I've been trying to do these Photoshop paintings more frequently in hopes of one day being color proficient. Originally this was supposed to be a self-portrait, but that was hard to do with only the reflective side of my scratched up iPod to look at, so I'll just say it isn't me. It more or less resembles some kind of 90210 character, or Laguna Beach dude or whatever interchangeable tv show the kids these days are watching.

Ryan Vs. Julian: Episode II

Walkcycle 3/1 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

Day 2 of my Walk a Day experiment. I'm not exactly sure where I was going with this one. This character looks drunk, but not the funny kind of drunk. "This sidewalks for regular walkin', not for fancy walkin'."

Ryan Vs. Julian: Episode 1

Walk Cycle 2/28 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

A former classmate of mine, who's blog I've been following, recently started drawing a "walk of the day", inspired by Richard Williams' The Animator's Survival Kit. After finishing so unbelievably bad in the January 11 Second Club animation contest, I decided that I should probably concentrate on character movement more. Although Julian may be slightly more talented than myself, I think it will be an interesting comparison and a friendly competition whether he accepts the duel or not.

February 11 Second Club... fuck dat shit.

11 Second Club try from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

I didn't get too far on this months 11 Second Club character animation contest. The original concept was too have this small squirrel look up with a crazy look in his eyes after eating some of the forest mushrooms. At this point various woodland creatures would be dancing and playing musical instruments and the such with psychedelic eyes. I think I enjoy coming up with the concept and the jokes over the actual animation itself, that's why the 11 Second Club seems so boring.

StarWars Uncut edit paste cut copy

StarWars Uncut Scene 72 from Ryan Ortgiesen on Vimeo.

I sent out a re-edit of my Star Wars Uncut animation for "The People Vs. George Lucas" film yesterday. If you're going to the South By Southwest festival check it out, especially look out for my clip.... because it's the best one.

A quick lil' Wacom painting of some rando at the Borders coffee shop. I really am starting to hate the people there. There's these two obese ladies who just so happen to be there every time I'm there and they bring there huge bag of crafts and trinkets and photos. They're basically bag ladies with money. Anyhow, they find it necessary to screech as many tables across the linoleum floor together and have there little arts and crafts time while complaining about other people they know with an essence of "why me?" in their attitudes. I need to get out of Gig Harbor.

Bwaaaahhhhhhhhhggging!

I always assumed blogging was for huge pussies who needed to complain somewhere or for those other kind of pussies who find it necessary to explain the minute details of celebrities lives, but here I am. In my goal for being slightly more productive, I'm going to try to put up some sketches, writings, thoughts and videos. You know, pussy shit.
